Family Concert

Special Programme

The beautiful Concertino for Cor Anglais and Orchestra by Gaetano Donizetti headlines our final concert for the year. We are grateful to welcome back our soloist for this postponed performance after Covid interruptions earlier in the year.

Another delayed performance (from last year's disrupted schedule) is the Overture in D Minor by German romantic composer Emilie Mayer, which is the fourth of her more than 15 concert overtures.

'The Celestial Gate of Praise' is an early work by NZ composer David Hamilton, recently revised and re-orchestrated for Leys Orchestra. Influences of the Armenian/American composer Alan Hovhanes are apparent in this youthful piece, which we premiered earlier this year in Warkworth.

Join us as we celebrate the service of two of our long serving members: Gordon Smith, who has been our Leader for 15 years, and Jan Leask, who has played with the orchestra for 35 years.

The programme also includes music by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert, Pechotsch and Jarnefelt, with special connection to our honourees.
