We've chosen a selection of bright and sunny compositions and carols for our end of year November concert.
The programme features Carolyn Hyde, a former member of the orchestra, playing Albinoni's Oboe Concerto Op. 9 No. 8. A prolific composer of the Italian baroque, this concerto is from a collection of 12 concertos Albinoni wrote in 1722 alternately for violin, oboe and two oboes in four sets of three.
We are also pleased to welcome special guest group the Sweet Pea String Trio performing Divertimento in G by English composer James Hook.
Baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann employs an exotic combination of solo instruments in his colourful 'Grillen' Symphony, which elegantly evokes the summer sounds of crickets.
The Italian-born composer Gaetano Brunetti wrote his mature music in Spain, predominantly for use in the royal court. In addition to his duties as an 18th-century court composer, Brunetti wrote 33 symphonies, of which his Symphony No. 23 is regarded as an example of his music at the height of his creativity.
From humble rural origins, Joseph Haydn became music director for the wealthy Hungarian aristocratic Esterhazy family for half a century. He wrote 106 symphonies, and is often called the "Father of the Symphony" for his development of the form. Symphony no. 97 is the fifth of a set of twelve symphonies Haydn wrote during his first visit to London. The Menuetto from this symphony is notable for different orchestrations in each repeat, including an adventurous solo violin passage at the end of the Trio.
The programme concludes with a medley of Christmas carols, including some familiar favourites, and less well-known carols from France and Venezuela, plus the recent favourite, Carol of the Bells.
After the performance you are invited to meet the orchestra over some light refreshments.
Admission is free.
